Pure Geometry - An Encounter of Latin America and Spain

The New York Public Library in collaboration with El Centro Español  – La Nacional, the Gallery CosmoArte Siglo XXV, present the exhibi: Pure Geometry - An Encounter of Latin America and Spain.
In this exhibit, visual art is combined into a single idea, the simplification of nature, pure geometry.
The artists: José María Yturralde (Spain), Estuardo Maldonado (Ecuador) and Monica Sarmiento Castillo (Ecuador/Spain) will be presenting their works in the tradition of the Constructivist Movement and more specifically the Three-Dimentionalist work, a style created by the artist Estuardo Maldonado.
Opening Reception  Friday, May 4th, 2012   6:00 - 7:30 pm

Place: Corner Room - Mid-Manhattan Library 
The exhibit will be ongoing until June 3rd and open to the public from 8am to 4pm Monday through Friday.   Saturdays open from 10am - 5pm and   Sundays 10am - 5pm.

Biography
Mr. Quintanilla, a native of León, Spain, received a B.A. in philosophy from the Monastery of Santa Maria, Burgos ( Spain ), an M.A. in theology from the Pontifical University , Rome ; a B.A. in Art from Wagner College , and an M.F.A. from Pratt University . He is currently pursuing a doctorate in canon law and liturgical studies at Ignatius University. Balancing work as an artist, curator, and educator, Quintanilla is a former master printer for Wagner Graphics Studio in New York; founder and co-editor of Artview , a State Island Arts
magazine; founding director of the Elizabeth Anne Seton Memorial Gallery in New Brunswick, New Jersey; and an adjunct assistant professor of Art (printmaking) at the College of Staten Island. Currently, he is writing a monograph with catalog raisonné on Peruvian master Jaime
Vázquez. Mr. Quintanilla's works have been exhibited in solo shows at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Springham Gallery (Matawan, New Jersey), Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital; Pratt Institute; Kade Gallery, Wagner College; and in group exhibitions at ARCO Gallery, Huesca, Spain, the Metropolitan Museum, New York; and Hanson Galleries, New York. In 1989, he was selected to represent the United States in a show of contemporary Art at Salon des Nations,Paris.

El Sr. Quintanilla, natural de León, España, obtuvo una licenciatura en filosofía del Monasterio de Santa María, Burgos (España), una maestría en teología en la Universidad Pontificia de Roma, una licenciatura en arte de Wagner College, y un M.F.A. de la Universidad de Pratt. Elvira Lindo (born January 22, 1962 in Cádiz, Spain) is a Spanish Journalist and writer. Her first novel was based on one of her fictional radio characters, the madrileño boy Manolito Gafotas, who has become a classic of Spanish children's literature. In 1998 Lindo was awarded the Premio Nacional de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil (National Award for Children's and Youth Literature) for her book Los trapos sucios de Manolito Gafotas, and she received the Biblioteca Breve (Tiny Library) Award for her adult novel Una palabra tuya. Antonio Muñoz Molina (born January 10, 1956) is a Spanish writer and, since June 8, 1995, a full member of the Royal Spanish Academy. He currently resides in New York City, United States. In 2004-2005 he served as the director of the Instituto Cervantes of New York. In 1987 Muñoz Molina was awarded Spain's National Narrative Prize for El invierno en Lisboa (translated as Winter in Lisbon), a homage to the genres of film noir and jazz music. His El jinete polaco received the Planeta Prize in 1991 and, again, the National Narrative Prize in 1992. His other novels include Beltenebros (1989), a story of love and political intrigue in post-Civil War Madrid, Los misterios de Madrid (1992), and El dueño del secreto (1994). Margaret Sayers Peden's English-language translation of Muñoz Molina's novel Sepharad won the PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize in 2004. Monica Sarmiento Castillo en NYPL Mid-Manhattan Library

Un encuentro entre el lenguaje Español y el arte precolombino, en esta ocasión la artista Monica Sarmiento Castillo a desarrollado, obras que se adentran en la simbología e identidad precolombina característica de Latinoamérica, la exposición estará acompañada durante un mes de actividades que acercaran a un mayor conocimiento del Lenguaje español y Latinoamericano, eventos que viene promocionando el estado de New York en la integración de las diversas lenguas y culturas, siendo el estado donde más lenguas se hablan, El estado de New York promueve obras de arte, como las de Mónica Sarmiento con una gran presencia de la naturaleza.
Sus obras se adentran en la investigación de las diversas vegetaciones, creando obras en pintura, escultura, collage, dibujo, vidrio. Es característica en su obra la cromática y estructuración constructivista, cada una de sus obras reflejan una estructura arbórea. Bosques que entrelazan la esencia de su creación y constituyen la base de su investigación. “El Árbol”.

Únase a nosotros para una discusión bilingüe de arte pre-colombino como un tema universal de la unión del hombre y el medio ambiente natural. Artista Mónica Sarmiento a discutir el papel de la naturaleza en el arte y la confluencia nativos americanos de la imagen impresa con el medio ambiente.
Una introducción general de Mónica Sarmiento, seguido de un "cóctel" breve acompañar el debate. Por favor, únase a este evento único y cautivante. Ambos oradores inglés y español son bienvenidos.
